The function of an epilator is similar to waxing, and it is an effective way to remove unwanted hair. The hair will re-grow after several weeks, probably three or four weeks. With regular use, the hair growth becomes finer, and the user gets accustomed to the pain associated with the use of an epilator.
For the device to successfully grab hair and pull it out, the hair strand should have a minimum length of a quarter inch. So before epilating, the user must ensure this length, so that the process is effective. As hair has varying thickness in different areas, an optimal speed adjustment is required. For instance, coarse hair tends to break at higher speeds. Hence, after determining the area with the thicket hair, the user can set the device to the right speed that would not cause breakage of hair.
It is good to experiment over an area on the skin that is not very sensitive and has light and fine hair, until the user gets accustomed to the sensation. Further, finer hair is less resistant, and helps minimize the pain. The process is easier, if it is done after a soothing warm bath, which will relax and open up the pores. It is better not to use creams or lotions before hair removal, as they hinder hair removal by making the strand slippery.
Turn on the device and holding it in one hand, move its head gradually over the skin, simultaneously using the other hand to stretch the skin, holding it tightly. This action tends to reduce the discomfort, allowing an easy and swift removal. For some devices, the head has to be moved in a circular manner, while with others, the head can just be moved on. There is no need to exert much pressure, and the unwanted hair would be caught in the head and pulled up, while moving it along the skin.
The best time to epilate the skin would be evening, as the blotches and irritation caused by the process would disappear overnight. During the first few attempts, skin irritation could be very disturbing, but the skin gets used to it with repeated use. After epilation, the irritation could be soothed by using a mild lotion. As each person has a different level of tolerance, the epilating process can be spread over one or two days, instead of being done at one stretch.
One or two days after epilation, the skin has recovered, has to be exfoliated, in order to prevent ingrown hair. It can be done by using a body scrub, to rid off dead cells, which further enhances the smoothness of the skin.
